Blog #1- Pre-Project 5/19

Welcome to my Project!

Since I can remember, I have always had a passion for nature. I loved going on bike rides, boat rides, and planting fruits and vegetables with my grandma. Restoring a garden was not at the top of my list, but I am incredibly excited to continue to garden and work in the outdoors. This project perfectly encompasses my love for nature and biology.

Working in the medicine part of biology is more related to what I want to pursue in the future, but due to COVID, it was hard to find a mentor in this field. I am glad I chose to garden and continue working with the outdoors and learning new things about the local flora and fauna.

Dani Doncevic and I will restore the Shakespeare Garden that was originally completed by Lori Kalberer in the 1970s. When given the opportunity,  Dani and I decided to work on restoring the Shakespeare Garden together. We both share a love for biology and the outdoors, so we thought it would be a great idea to work together.

On Hawken's campus, the Shakespeare Garden is located on the right side of the White House, just behind the veterans memorial.

For our project, we had to come up with a list of essential questions, these include:

  •  What will the theme of the garden be and how can we relate it to the historical context of our campus?
  • How will we incorporate native plants as well as taking into account different sunlight, wind, and soil conditions?
  • What plants will we end up using?
  • Will we add a path into the garden or a bench?
  • How will we utilize the fountain space?

  1. I love your essential questions, Najah. I agree with you that this will be a fantastic project and will wrap up your time at Hawken nicely. Don't mind if I stop by now and then to say hello and spend a little time in the great outdoors with you :). I wish you good weather & a really successful project!
