Blog #7- The Impact We Have
How does your organization affect the lives of others? How have you affected someone else while on project?
At the beginning of our project, Dani and I didn’t think we would impact anyone. But as our project comes to a close, Dani and I both realize that our project is doing more good than we initially thought. At the beginning of our project, Dani and I talked to Mr. Dlugosz, who is a teacher here at Hawken in the science department. He told us that he finally appreciated that someone is finally taking care of the garden here on campus. Mr. Dlugosz has been teaching at Hawken for over 40 years, and he told both Dani and I that he is finally happy to see someone fixing up the Garden.
Earlier in the project, Dani and I were talking to Ms. Buckley, one of the art teachers here at Hawken, about putting a sculpture in our garden. She too was very excited and happy that Dani and I were taking an initiative to finally fix the garden. She said that at her time at Hawken, currently just cleaned with nothing in it, is the best that the garden has ever looked.
Lastly when Dani and I visited Lori Kalberer, she thanked us for finally fixing the garden. This project was originally her senior project back in 1977, but by the 90’s the garden grew wild and no one maintained it. 40 years later, two girls finally come along and restore it to its original beauty. And when she heard about our homage to the White family, it brought her back to when she was doing her senior project while the barn burned down and how she helped put it out.
These testimonials about our garden opened my eyes. We have impacted people when we thought we would have no impact whatsoever. Having a beautiful outside space for everyone to enjoy will hopefully brighten their day. This garden also serves as a time capsule for others. I hope this garden will continue to collect more memories and impact more lives in the Hawken community.
